At Healing In Progress Chinese Medicine of Lincoln, NE, I do what few other acupuncture specialists in the area do and add moxibustion to many of my acupuncture treatments. Moxibustion is a hyperthermal (mugwort fire) treatment that can be used alone or in conjunction with acupuncture and Chinese herbal treatments. The first written record of this practice by a professional is credited to Bian Que, a Chinese physician who lived circa 500 BCE when he documented moxibustion acupuncture in great detail.
In the 1575 edition of Introduction To Medicine, a Chinese physician advises moxibustion be used in cases where acupuncture and Chinese herbs alone are not able to cure a disease. Today, I use moxibustion in daily practice as did our ancient Chinese physicians. The term moxibustion comes from “moxa” for mugwort, which is the herb burned near the surface of the skin. Combined treatments are called “acu-moxa.”
For moxa treatment, I place tiny bundles of the herb along vital points of your body, similar to acupuncture and acupressure practices. The burning herb does not burn your skin, but it warms the Qi (energy), warms the blood, rids the body of cold and excess dampness, and places the Yang energy back in balance, thereby regulating normal organ function and restoring your health. I use this treatment most often for gynecological problems, digestive problems, and in the treatment of hot flashes.
